Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I start?

I always begin a new counselling relationship with an informal chat. For children and young people, in most cases this will be with a parent or carer. This will help me understand your concerns and explain what support I can offer, and will help you decide if counselling with me would be a good fit for your child. For students and adults, this gives us an opportunity to talk about what you’re looking for and how I might be able to help.

There is no charge for this and no obligation to move forward with counselling sessions.

How much does it cost?

Counselling sessions for new clients are £50, whether in-person or online. Unless we agree otherwise, I will send an invoice at the end of each month, which is payable within 30 days.

How many sessions will I need?

This is very personal. I do not operate on a short-term model and believe the counselling relationship should not come to an end until the child or young person feels ready. Counselling sessions normally take place on a weekly basis and I usually ask clients to commit to at least eight sessions at the beginning.

Many families find it suits them to keep counselling to school term time only, but it is possible to continue over the school holidays.

Does online counselling work for children?

In an ideal world, counselling children would always take place in person. I use art, toys and games as tools in my practice and nothing can replace true one-to-one interaction.

But we live in a time when technology can connect people across the country and beyond. Even the youngest children have become accustomed to interacting with teachers and friends via video call. I am experienced in online counselling and use a range of methods to engage with children and young people during our sessions.

Do you only work with children?

Not at all. I am fully qualified to work with people of any age.

What locations do you cover?

In-person counselling takes place at a private counselling studio in the Wardie area of Edinburgh.

My online counselling practice is open to anyone from any location.
